But it is also a reality that the entry level saxophones (even of the leading brands) are made in China, or the newer developing countries as China’s labour is getting dearer. It is certainly true that most of them are flimsy because people want to buy them cheap. It’s been interesting reading the discussion thread on Chinese made instruments. Re: C Melody saxophone : Anyone selling a C melody saxophone? Thanks (The caveat being that some of these guys are on the payroll of particular makers, and have to play their instruments when performing in public.) # They highly recommend Yamahas to their students, due to their doing everything competently, but don’t play them themselves. Most of them play vintage Selmers of course, a few of them play modern instruments by high-end boutique makers. But I work with a number of professional sax players and none of them would ever dream of playing a Chinese sax. Now I’m sure they’re improving all the time, it’s the way these things go. The band-instrument industry has been flooded in recent years by inexpensive Chinese instruments.Ī friend of mine who has made her living her whole adult life as a band instrument repair tech, and who is very accomplished and knowledgeable, calls them ISOs (Instrument-Shaped Objects) due to them looking like trumpets or clarinets or flutes or saxes on the outside, but not resembling them on the inside. ![]()
